How to repair tears in a leather car seat
Replacing a leather tear yourself instead of hiring a professional can save a lot of money. The process itself is not complicated but does require carefully following the instructions and being patient.
- Adhesive glue
- Dye from the kit
- Rubbing alcohol or warm water
- Leather conditioner
- Replacement leather
- A piece of sandpaper
- Cotton wool
- Little pieces of cloth
Step 1. To make the leather tear repairment easier and more effective, cut all of the edges and rough areas of the tear by using scissors. If the areas are small, consider using nail scissors instead.
Step 2. Before proceeding to the leather tear repairment, it is important to clean the tear with warm water or alcohol. Disinfect the area around the tear as well. That way, it will prevent the replacement leather from getting dirty too fast as well as the current leather from losing its color.
Step 3. Cut the replacement leather from the kit with one inch more than required to cover the tear on the car seat. That way, it will for sure cover the entire tear of the surface and soak up all of the dye.
Step 4. Put the adhesive glue all around the edges of the tear. Then, place the replacement leather piece on top of the tear and allow it to completely dry over a few hours. Apply the sandpaper on top of the replacement leather in order to remove the rough edges and the remainings of the glue.
Step 5. Apply a small amount of color to the replacement leather. Leather kits provide all the necessary colors that will match the color of the car seat. In case of applying too much dye, use the sponge to rub it off and prevent it from leaking.
Step 6. Spread the leather conditioner to the seat for a glossy finish.
How to fix scratches on leather furniture
In order to fix pet scratches, the following items are needed:
- Leather finish
- Leather colorant
- Leather sealant
- Leather putty
- Leather binding glue
- Leather cleaner
Step 1. Clean the damaged area with a leather cleaner to get rid of all the dirt which may prevent effective leather repairment. It is advised to ask a professional leather service for a recommended brand of the cleaner. They can also often be found in stores.
Step 2. If there are loose fibers near the cut, carefully get rid of them by using scissors, however, be careful not to cut too close to the edge, as it can cause further damage to the leather.
Step 3. Use the special leather binding glue by applying it to the sponge and then rubbing it into the surface of the cut. After the first coat, wait for a few minutes and then apply additional 8-9 coats of glue. Wait a couple of minutes between each coat to allow it to dry thoroughly.
Step 4. Smoothen the area by applying fine sandpaper. This procedure will help to achieve smooth and even surface.
Step 5. Remove the sandpaper and spread a thin layer of leather paint by using a palette knife. Allow it to dry for approximately 20-25 minutes. Then, apply additional layers of paint if needed.
Step 6. After the leather paint or fillers have dried, smoothen the area by using the sandpaper. Then, wipe the area with a cleaning solution to remove dirt and residue.
Step 7. Allow the cleaner to dry and afterward use a sponge to apply a small amount of colorant to the area. Keep applying multiple layers of the colorant to help and blend the affected area with the rest of the leather surface. Finally, use 4 to 5 layers of leather finish product to complete the leather repairment procedure.
